Choosing Our Purpose

“I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I woke and saw that life was duty. I acted and behold, duty was joy”
Something I’ve realized about myself is that I’m happiest when I have a set purpose.
A lot of people, especially in the manosphere, say things like…
“A man must have a purpose in this world to focus on.”
And I agree with that, but for the longest time, I wondered what my purpose was.
I made all sorts of statements…
I want to be the worlds greatest copywriter!
I want to be a coach and show people how to make money!
I want to grow this company to $1M a month!
And while a statement like this is exciting when we first speak it into existence…
It’s hard to keep the excitement going.
I think a key indicator that it sounded exciting and wasn’t actually your purpose is whether or not you get bored of it.
Right now, my purpose isn’t anything super sexy…
Here it is: To be useful to myself and others, to make the right decisions on a daily basis, and avoid the wrong ones.
Literally, that’s all success is, people think it’s about making a bunch of right decisions, but truthfully, it’s just about not making the wrong ones!
Now here’s the thing…
Is my purpose that I want to make $100,000,000 and move to Dubai to create some sort of groundbreaking world-changing company?
Nope.
I don’t really care for all that, maybe a younger version of me would say “Why would you limit yourself like that? You can be anything you set your mind to!”
If I was face to face with that version of me, I would give him a big ole hug, and tell him…
“You’ll understand soon.”
Truthfully, I just want to be a man who’s capable of raising some boys to be tremendous beacons of light in this world.
That’s what sounds like the most fulfilling life I could live.
Four or five kids, a few daughters but at minimum two sons around the same age.
That super fast, super business-driven lifestyle isn’t very conducive to being able to raise a family in the way I would want to raise it.
If that’s what I want most…
Why would I sabotage it and go in the opposite direction?
Now I’m not shaming money-making, I think money is fantastic.
But I do think there’s a moment where you have to ask yourself, when is enough enough?
Because something I think a lot of guys say is “i’m making this money for my family” but I guarantee your family would be much happier with half the income and replace that with double the time with a healthy father figure.
So when I think about my duty or my purpose…
It’s just about setting myself up for that life.
Is it selfish?
Kinda, but it’s not 100% for me, it’s for my future family.
My purpose is about being.
Being the man that attracts the right woman…
Being the man that can hold the burden that comes with the responsibility of a family…
Being the man that can navigate the tragedies of life and still be the rock for my family…
Being the man.
That’s my duty or purpose, I don’t really care for all the other nonsense at this point in my life.
