Create A Story Worth Telling

Dirk Bulckens ‘86

Oh, my friends…

It’s been a long day.

However, here I am, writing a daily substack post for you…

And this is post number 51…

In other words, I have written one of these for 51 days in a row.

I actually had someone comment the other day on how consistent I am with posting these substacks up…

And truly no one is keeping me accountable to this commitment…

Like if I didn’t post tomorrow, am I going to have 30 people ask me, why didn’t you post?

Nope.

I don’t think anyone would really care.

Obviously people like these posts, I have people reach out to me all the time saying they really enjoyed it or that it’s one of their favorite parts of their day…

But no one demands this level of consistency from me.

Except for me.

And that’s because I’ve already written the story, and I think this is something that’s useful for anyone to implement into their life.

The story goes like this…

2 years from now I’m going to be on some podcast and mention that for 785 days in a row I wrote a substack post and didn’t miss a single day.

It’s set in stone, it’s going to happen, now I just need to execute it.

That story sounds awesome to live out, so why not make it happen?

I think an amazing life has to be filled with amazing stories…

And you might as well ask yourself, what story do I want to tell?

You plan these stories out based on the future you want, and then execute them to make them come true.

You can do this with anything…

Just tell the story as if it’s already happened.

“I stepped on the scale and saw 250 pounds staring back at me, and from that moment on I committed to the gym and getting my health in order, and here I am now 2 years later, 190, jacked, lean, and coaching others on how to do the same.”

And I think committing yourself to that story means you need to look at things in terms of a daily commitment…

What would you have to do every day for 2 years to make that come true?

And then you do it.

I have this one story in my head that I really like…

“I bought a piece of property with about 150 acres of land and I’ve been raising cattle on it for the last few years”

I want to be able to tell that story…

Nick, the marketing wizard who’s a psychedelic explorer and lover of philosophy also owns a lot of cows but he still occasionally goes to big cities to enjoy being a boujee bitch.

Sounds like an awesome story to live out that’s not super unrealistic, so why not make it happen?

I understand the people who say to live in the moment…

But you know what’s better?

Living in the moment AND being intentional.

I know who I want to be…

I know that I want to be the person that people look at and go how the fuck does he do that?

How the hell did he get his body to look that way?

How did he grow his finances like that?

How did he get all those cows?

(I love cows)

He walks in the room and instantly people go, who the hell is that guy?

Why do I want that?

First, it sounds awesome and it probably is awesome based on the people I know who do have that.

Second, to show other people how to do the same, because is there anything better to do in this world?

Third, the creation of the vision is the inner sport…

It’s you competing with yourself and the world, is that not the ULTIMATE form of competition?

And sure, the story gets tweaked as you mature and change and all that good stuff…

But I think what I’m laying out is the master key everyone is looking for.

You write the story as if it’s already happened…

And then you do it.

Just write a story that’s worth telling.
