Not My Currency

My mentor was in town the other day which lead to some much-needed conversations with him.
He always has a way of making me see the bigger picture…
And there’s always these things that come out of his mouth that are just absolute golden phrases.
Some are funny…
Some are serious…
I’ll share a few with you.
A funny one happened when we went to go get a haircut after he landed…
He sits down on the barber chair and says…
“Hair is kind of crazy right now…let me know if you find a set of BMW keys while you’re working around in there.”
Hilarious.
They say that a dad is not measured by the number of kids he has…
But by the number of dad jokes he has.
That was a pretty good one.
But on a more serious note…
Later in the day, we were driving to my friend Kyree’s house and somehow the topic of confidence came up.
I told him…
“It seems like sometimes I’m really confident and then sometimes I’m not…like it’s entirely dependent on my circumstances and whether I’m winning or not.”
We pulled up to a light and I looked over at him to hear his answer.
“Yeah I don’t trade in that currency anymore”
“What do you mean?”
“You’re trading your confidence based on what’s going on in your life, but it shouldn’t come and go, you should keep it no matter what.”
And that was a really interesting point…
So I decided to do some mushrooms yesterday and think about that, as you should, right?
I’m in this big hot bathtub thinking about what he said…
And something hit me about that phrase…
“I don’t trade in that currency.”
Confidence is a positive currency…
And it only seems fit that with universal law if you’re constantly trading negative energy…
It would probably start to affect your positive energy and almost inadvertently cause you to trade some away.
I thought about how at the gym the other day, I saw this personal trainer working with a girl…
Putting her through what I felt was the dumbest workout to achieve what most girls want in the gym…
Big booty, toned legs, flat tummy.
And I’m thinking about how incompetent this guy is…
How useless this workout program is that she’s paying for…
And all sorts of other rude thoughts inside my head.
Sitting in that bathtub I realized…
“Damn, I’m sometimes a very negative person for no other reason than to make myself feel better or superior to others.”
I don’t know that guy.
I don’t know that girl.
Why am I at all concerned with what they’re doing…
And more so, why am I thinking these rude thoughts about them?
If I want to view myself in a positive manner…
I have to view the world in a positive manner.
The way we view the world is often how we view ourselves…
Cause…
And effect.
Give some thought to this, my friends.
It really helped me yesterday to have that honest conversation with myself and realize how unnecessary those little internal dialogues are…
To me, it seems like it just erodes a solid foundation of your own confidence if you need to tear others down to lift yourself up.
