Real Friends Call You Out

This morning I woke up at 4 AM.

However, I didn’t want to get up, just wanted an hour more of sleep so I wouldn’t be so drained.

My friend Dimitri who I’m staying is in med school and has to get up early for his shift at the hospital he’s working at.

By the way, did you know that they don’t pay these med students to work at the hospitals before their residency?

The students have to pay the hospital to work there!

Such a scam, I’m still in shock that’s a real thing.

Anyways, so Dimitri walks into my room at 5 AM and says, “I’m surprised I’m up before you.”

“Yeah, I woke up at 4 and I needed an extra hour of sleep.”

“Oh, so you negotiated.”

Fuck.

“Yeah, I negotiated.”

I laid in bed not wanting to accept the truth and came up with every excuse possible, but eventually, the ownership started to kick in.

And Dimitri said from the other room…

“You should write about this today. Write about you and your crevasse.”

For those of you who don’t know, a crevasse is a deep open crack.

Basically, he was saying write about me being a giant pussy.

That’s a real friend right there.

I got up, wiped the crust out of my eyes, threw on some joggers, and went downstairs to get a coffee.

Dimitri and I chatted for a bit before he headed out.

I appreciated that he called me out on my shit, I don’t try and project some image of perfection through my content.

I make mistakes all the time, I break character, and I do things I shouldn’t do.

Most of the time I can keep myself on track and correct that behavior…

But sometimes I negotiate with myself, break my word, and I justify a behavior I shouldn’t have done.

I think that’s normal for most people, but I’m not trying to be like most people and I’m sure as hell not trying to be normal.

And I’m pretty grateful I have a friend who gets that, and who holds me accountable to that without much wiggle room.

That’s the type of friend you need in your circle.
