The decision had been made, we would be building a canal in Panama to help expedite our supply lines into the US. The French had already tried to do the same but failed miserably. Now, it was America's turn. The stakes were incredibly high, because the failed French attempt had already cost billions of dollars and thousands of lives lost to disease and accidents. If America failed, it would be a humiliation on the world stage. Newly elected President Theodore Roosevelt knew the success of the Panama Canal could define his legacy. He assembled a team of the nation's top engineers, led by the brash and confident John Frank Stevens. Stevens had helped build the Great Northern Railroad, but this project would dwarf anything he had faced before. Stevens and his engineers journeyed to Panama in 1905 to survey the site of the abandoned French works. What they found was an utter disaster - rubble and rusting equipment baking under the tropical sun and overgrown with jungle. They would essentially have to start from scratch if they had any hope of completing what the French could not. So what did they do? They made a plan. And not just any plan - an exhaustive, meticulous, borderline obsessive plan. Stevens and his team analyzed every conceivable variable that could either accelerate or impede their progress. For example… * They studied 10+ years of rain patterns to engineer dams to control the Canal's water supply and flood control. * They built state-of-the-art machines 4x faster than outdated French equipment to excavate earth. * They installed electric trains moving constant cargo across the vast construction site to help speed everything up * Mosquito breeding hot spots were targeted for intense pesticide spraying to prevent workers from catching malaria and yellow fever. The plan ventured deeply into every specific detail. The US triumphed against all odds in 1914, finishing its construction of The Panama Canal, all thanks to a solid plan and talented execution. International trade was changed forever. So here’s my question to you… Who are you going to be more like in 2024? The French, who just kind of showed up and tried to figure it out along the way?
