T&C Day 2 - Mitigating Excuses

Here we are in San Diego, which if you didn’t know, actually translates to “the inside of a whale’s vagina.”
If you get that reference, you’re awesome, if you didn’t, you’re not.
As I mentioned in my last post, I set a challenge for myself to make sure that while I’m at this marketing conference event, I’m also sticking to the commitments I’ve made with my health and fitness.
I think it’s just really easy to screw yourself over because let’s face it, traveling can be kind of inconvenient.
And what happens is you mess up one thing…
Like you miss a workout…
And then for some reason we decide, “well hey I already messed that up, so I might as well mess everything else up”
You then proceed to fuck up your diet, you’re drinking more, you’re having dessert, on and on and on…
And you just completely ruin all of the momentum you’ve created for yourself when you were back home in your routine.
It’s the equivalent of blowing out one tire and then deciding, “well hey I already blew out one tire, might as well slash the remaining three.”
I just refuse to make excuses at this point because they make me feel like a little boy, and that’s not the identity I’m going to take on.
So here are some of the ways I’m making sure I keep my momentum…
When we got here to San Diego, we went to the Airbnb, dropped our stuff off, and went immediately to a Wholefoods.
One of the main things I hate about traveling is how difficult it can be to control what food you’re getting…
If you’re only around garbage food, and you’re starving…
You’re going to make bad decisions.
Excuse #1: I can’t keep a good diet while traveling
So we grabbed a bunch of the pre-cooked meats which Whole Foods sells usually by the deli, and then just grabbed some rice, meat sticks for snacks, eggs, and smoked salmon…
And the reason we did an Airbnb over a hotel is that…
- Hotel fridges are small AF and can't hold much
- Hotels don't have kitchens and you can’t cook anything
I’m not trying to cook a complicated recipe or anything while I’m traveling, but it’s nice to be able to do some scrambled eggs real quick in the morning.
Not saying you can’t get the job done in a hotel, just saying I would prefer to do it with an Airbnb.
Excuse #2: I can’t hit a workout
Hotel gyms are usually shitty, and the one we got at this Airbnb isn’t that much better, but again, it gets the job done and maybe you can’t do a full-range workout…
But you certainly can get a solid lift in and still be able to keep up your momentum.
If that’s not an option, you can go to any gym and buy a day pass to use their equipment…
And if that’s not an option, hit a body weight work out.
We make time for what we care about.
Excuse #3: The event brings out my bad habits
And last but not least, a lot of your ability to keep momentum comes from saying no at these events…
Saying no to the invite to stay out till 3 am…
Saying no to another drink…
Saying no to the deserts they’re passing around…
We’re going to these after-parties mainly to meet people and I think I got asked 4-5 times last night by people if I’d like for them to get me a drink.
I tapped out 2 drinks, and just had to politely say, “No thanks, I’m good.”
That was one thing in Austin I messed up on, I just kept saying Yes because I felt like it was the nice thing to do but honestly, now the way I look at it is that it’s much nicer for me to stick to my commitments…
Because that way I’m being a better version of myself, which means I can show up better for you.
Reframes.
It’s all about the reframes.
